Julien Benneteau was the 'lucky loser' at this year's Cincinatti Masters tennis tournament. For those of you who do not know what that means, it means he fell in qualifying but he was the highest seed to fall in the latest round of the qualifiers. When Juan Martin Del Potro predictably withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue that left a vacancy in the already made draw and Julien Benneteau then got a look at the Cincinnati Masters draw from the perspective of a 6 seed, which would have been Del Potro's positioning.
Not only did Benneteau inherit a bye in the first round but, with the draw of the 6th seeded Del Potro, Benneteau was assured a second round match that was winnable and he ended up beating the 37th ranked Jurgen Melzer (Benneteau is 55th). Then in the third round, with the other seeded player in Benneteau's section falling, he faced 53rd ranked Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Benneteau dismissed him as well.
