World No. 4 and 2008 Cincinnati Masters finalist Novak Djokovic looks for career-win No. 3 over Gilles Simon Friday afternoon. The 22-year-old enters into their quarterfinal-round clash with a slender 2-1 edge in the head-to-head series. Djokovic has recorded back-to-back hard-court victories over Simon, including a semifinals win during his run to the championships in Dubai earlier this season. The Frenchman posted his only match-win to date at the 2008 tournament in Marseille, narrowly defeating the Serb in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

The World No. 4 aims to make his fifth appearance in a Masters Series semifinal in 2009. Djokovic finished among the final four in Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid. The 22-year-old advanced to contest the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters championship match in 2008 before falling to World No. 2 Andy Murray, 6-7, 6-7.

Tomas Berdych is the 18th ranked man on tour and he has experienced some success heads up against Nadal as Berdych has 3 wins and 4 losses against the Spaniard. However, Berdych has not beaten Nadal since the 2006 tour season, with Nadal winning 3 matches and all 7 sets played between the 2 since that season.

Berdych, solid as a top 20 player will be, has not experience much success this season against the top 10 and should have his hands full with Nadal. Nadal showed in his third round match that he is almost back to his old self.

He demonstrated strength and heart as he fought back against Paul-Henri Mathieu after being down a break and that should make the Spaniard a heavy favorite in his quarterfinal match. Odds have not been set at time of writing, but our pick is Nadal to win in straight sets

It is a quest that has attracted less attention this week than Maria Sharapova’s return from injury, Kim Clijsters’ carefully executed comeback to the WTA Tour or Serena Williams’s pursuit of top-ranked Dinara Safina.

But make no mistake: Down Under, they will be watching Samantha Stosur very carefully today. Slammin’ Sam,’ a 22-time winner on the doubles circuit who has been slicing her way up the women’s singles rankings and is now No. 17, can advance to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup with a win over world No. 4 Elena Dementieva.

Lleyton Hewitt doesn't have a good record against Roger Federer, but at least Hewitt has held his own over his career. Head to head they have played each other 21 times which is not at all surprising given that they are about the same age and that they have both advanced deep into draws over the years. The last time the two players met however was over a year ago now on the grass courts of Wimbledon and Federer won that match easily in straight sets.

The interesting thing about this head to head series is that it has been decidedly one-sided in recent years: Hewitt, though taking 7 matches off of a Federer career-wise has not beaten the Swiss Maestro since 2003. Since that year Federer has rattled off 12 consecutive victories over Hewitt, including 8 on hard court surfaces (and 1 in Cincinnati). In fact, since 2003, Hewitt has only taken 4 individual sets of off Federer in their 12 encouters.
